Carpet is still traditionally one of the most economical forms of floor coverings on a square metre basis because it's a product that primarily is installed directly over underlay and the sub-floor surface, where most other forms of floor coverings have labour and product requirements to prepare the sub-floor surface to receive the installed product, such as vinyls.

In New Zealand we are spoilt for choice when it comes to carpets, having some of the best wool in the world for our 100% wool carpets and now we are also enjoying a growing trend for premium solution dyed nylons with their fade resistant and serviceability features.

A good carpet will give you years and years of service. A good underlay and installation using correct methods are important aspects to this too - even more reason to put your trust in Gerrand Floorings when making your carpet decisions.

When looking at the price of carpets, these are usually detailed as a lineal metre price. A lineal metre is 3.66m wide (12 ft old school) or some of the newer nylons are produced on a 4.0m wide loom. You should only use these prices as a guide only - what is the most important is the "on the floor" cost including a good underlay and installation.

Carpets are rated domestic and commercial (and sometimes both). Domestically in NZ carpets are generally heavy duty rated (about a 5-7 year life) and extra heavy duty rated (about a 10-15+ year life). If you have stairs in your home, also check the carpet you are looking at is stair-rated.

Gerrand Floorings boast an extensive selection of domestic and commercial carpets to meet the needs and requirements of their database including the premium Bremworth Collection by Cavalier Bremworth - one of only 36 warranted dealers in the whole country to showcase this prestigious range.

Carpet Handy Hints

Painted walls and skirting boards and wallpapered walls – most carpets have an unforgiving jute or action back backing. Paint can take up to seven days to cure and harden, with enamel paints sometimes taking 30 days. Skirting board protectors are used and all care is taken but even a gentle brush with carpet on a wall holding soft paint or wallpaper can be detrimental. The longer the time between paint and wallpaper finishing to carpet installation, the better.

Carpet, once installed with underlay, is approximately 22-26mm in height, often much more for top end products. This is perfect for butting to installed timber floors and ceramic tiles. However, your ceramic tiler needs to install an aluminium finishing bar under the last row of tiles to allow our carpet installation teams to fit the product nicely to the tiles – sharp tile edges without their own finishing bar can also cut feet and carpet pile – this bar cannot be installed retrospectively after the tiles are finished.

Mats – a carpet installation will rarely have large pieces of off-cuts – jobs are generally very tight as leftover material is costly and uneconomic for you. If mats are required, please let us know prior to pricing so we can allow for your requirements. We have our own in-house overlocking service.

Lifts – Installation of carpet to some lifts is a specialist job undertaken by the lift installers, not carpet installers. We still need to allow for the supply of product to match the rest of the home and provide the product to the lift specialists once all the other carpet product is cut for the residence. Talk to us about your type of lift and installation requirements.

Furniture Shifting – we offer this service for larger items but ask that clients pack away their nearest and dearest possessions.

Uplifted Carpet – our carpet proposals allows for the uplift and disposal of existing floor coverings in existing homes. Wherever possible your uplifted carpet is recycled into weedmat, for worm farms or reused in commercial or residential building sites. We also supply local manufacturers with uplifted carpet again reusing to pack around and protect product being dispatched around the country.

Often we are asked by builders for old uplifted carpet and/or underlay to protect new concrete on building sites – we do have this from time to time, depending on when uplifts are disposed of – call us to check.

Installation Timelines - If your building project is running earlier or later than originally scheduled, contact or communication helps us to find alternative available spots quickly. Lead-in time for carpet and vinyl installs is usually around 2-3 weeks (submit to product availability) although windows of availability are possible with cancellations. These are guides only.

Gerrand Floorings specialise in solid Tongue & Groove timber projects but there are several other timber options available for every budget.

solid wood flooring

Solid Wood Flooring Options

Gerrand Floorings have strong relationships with many solid timber sources - allowing them to obtain the best product (species, thickness, finish) for the client's needs and requirements at the time. These projects require finishing with sanding and the application of polyurethane to finish and are generally the most expensive option when it comes to timber choices. Timber thickness varies from project to project but the most common thickness is the choice of a 19mm product.

In the recent past finishes such as dark staining, lime washing or bleaching were popular on solid T&G floor installations but now we are seeing a move more back to a traditional finish. Those wanting the look of a dark stain, wash or bleach tend to more towards an engineered product that already has the look required without the additional investment required to achieve it.

The end finish has a range of options too - moisture cured or water based polyurethane, oil or wax finish to name a few - each have their own features and benefits that we are happy to go over with you.

Engineered Timber

For those still wanting the look of a true timber without investing in a solid product, other options on the market are engineered timber products that still retain a top layer of solid true product and generally come pre-finished. These also come in a variety of thicknesses - Gerrand Floorings recommend nothing thinner than a 12mm product.

Timber or Wood look a like

Timber or Wood Look-a-like

The options continue further with Timber or Wood look-a-like options in the form of laminates, formica, designer vinyl woodplank and sheet vinyls.

Some of some of the pre-finished or engineered timber flooring suppliers:

Ekowood

Ekowood presents a stunning range of hardwood flooring designed by nature itself and perfected with leading edge technology.

World class in every respect, Ekowood is quite simply the result of a manufacturer’s technical expertise, deep understanding of the variable properties of wood, and an ability to transform that wood into stable, functional and aesthetically desirable flooring.

As a global market leader, Ekowood is revered within its’ own industry, and the brand Ekowood has become a symbol for high quality, drawing admiration and creating desirability across many continents. Ekowood is manufactured to ISO 9001:2000 Quality Standards.

In a world which is becoming more aware each day of environmental pressures on the very existence of our planet, we look increasingly to responsible governments and manufacturers to provide leadership and integrity going forward. As a member of the Malaysian Timber Council, The National Wood Flooring Association of America and with accreditation to the Forest Stewardship Council, Ekowood leads by example. It’s very future after all, depends on the legitimacy and sustainability of it’s timber resources.

Now the timeless beauty of a genuine wood floor comes with engineered stability, developed over many years and accepted as the benchmark by which the quality of all wood flooring is measured.

Woodworks

Woodworks is a range of high quality pre-finished wood flooring which offers one of the largest choices in species, colour and design in New Zealand. Woodworks wood flooring is made from prime grade wood and is sourced from the best factories in Europe and Asia. All products come with a ten year manufacturer’s warranty.

Some important points to consider when preparing for your new timber floor.

Before we can install timber, the moisture content of a concrete floor must be less than 75% relative humidity. This means from roof and on windows. In the Bay of Plenty region, it usually takes approximately 4-6 months from the last exposure to water to reach this percentage level. Another option to shortcut this wait is for our team to apply a moisture barrier to the sub-floor prior to installation but this does involve an additional investment.

Leave all skirting boards and toe kicks off so we can allow an expansion gap. It is best that you put on these items after we have installed the timber.

Kitchens – we prefer the kitchen is installed (apart from toe kicks as above) so that the number of tradesmen following is minimal.

Sanding and Polyurethane – once this process is underway the area needs to be isolated entirely. Even opening a door to see how things look can result in dust blowing in and causing a grit finish. For existing homes and renovations, it is best the client goes away (and they may wish to also do this with the strong smell) or living within another area of the home. For new homes, no other trades can access the area over this time.

Sheet and Designer Vinyls are one of the unsung achievers in the floorcoverings industry...

Every two years from Europe designs and advances are made with products, styles and textures - today your vinyl flooring can represent anything from a leather look through to timber, mosaic, polished concrete and so much more. This applies to both domestic and commercial vinyls. Vinyls are even extended now to Designer Vinyl Options in Woodplank and Tile form, replicating hundreds of options with the benefits of a vinyl product.

In a sheet vinyl form, the 2-metre wide products are the most popular and common width available in New Zealand. Today most modern domestic vinyls come with additional features or benefits of some description, such as anti-slip or advanced finishes for ease of cleaning. Commercial Vinyls too come in a range of grades and the old adage of "you get what you pay for" is absolutely 100% true with a commercial product - a low maintenance commercial product may have a higher initial investment but over its lifetime will be a better investment as the cost to maintain it commercially is far lower than a product that has had a more economical initial cost.

Gerrand Floorings always carry a wide range of 2-metre wide domestic vinyls in their Stock range available at $50 per lineal metre (or $25 per square metre) - being able to purchase these as stock rolls makes this available at a good price point - these products usually always retail for much, much more than the stock price available.
